Early Child Discovery and Design Magnet School (P.S. 185)
The mission of the Early Childhood Magnet School for Discovery and Design is to actively engage children in learning that will effectively prepare them for the future. We provide our pre-kindergarten through second grade students with 21st century learning tools and thematic learning experiences built around an engineering approach. Our students ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, EVALUATE and IMPROVE as they think and problem solve.
We believe engineering for very young children is about discovering things and designing things. Students will make a plan, solve a problem, design something and then improve upon it. Our goal is to create thinkers – we teach reading and grammar discretely, but we also teach a way of thinking that addresses reading, grammar and math within our theme. We are always teaching students to think about the possibilities within something. We want them to not just take our word about information, but to question, think about and discover what things can be.
