Special Programs

Physical Education Class

All students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade receive P.E. in the gymnasium 1-2 times a week. They learn how to play cooperatively, learn about healthy exercising, and how your body works. Students also learn about competitive games from around the world. 

 

Swimming at Asphalt Greens and Harlem YMCA

Students in grades 2nd and 3rd grade attend weekly swimming lessons at Asphalt Greens or the Harlem YMCA throughout the school year. 

 

Sports Recreation

 

Basketball: Students in grades 3rd through 5th grade have the opportunity to join the schools basketball team.

 

Cheerleading: Students in grades 3rd through 5th may join the schools cheerleading team. 

 

Rugby: Students in grades 3rd through 5th grade have the opportunity to join the schools Rugby team through Play Rubgy USA. Students participate in city wide competitions against other schools with the Rugby USA Program. 

 

Before School Extended Day Program

Students in grades Kindergarten to 5th grade who need additional instructional support attend before school class from 8:00 a.m. - 8:40 a.m. on designated school days. During this time, students work with teachers in a small group of 10 students and one teacher on English Language Arts and Mathematics. 

 

French Instruction

All students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade receive French instruction 1-2 times a week. Students are learning a variety of communication words and basic phrases in French using the AIM French instruction. Students participate in French instruction through music and readings of classical stories in French. 

 

Reading Partners

Students in grades 1st through 5th grade that need tutoring support in reading were provided with 45 minute tutoring 2 times a week. 

 

Reach the World
Students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th have the opportunity to learn about world geography and cultures around the world through a college buddy studying abroad through Reach the World. Students ask questions and have access to reading an online log of articles written by a college student studying abroad. Students get to Skype with the traveler 3 times during the semester. 

 

Cook Shop
Students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade participate in CookShop lessons to learn about nutritious balanced cooking. 

 

Keep the Beat
Students in Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade participate in a character education program through music. Students work, as a class to put on a Broadway show and learn how to work cooperatively, be caring, open-minded and risk takers. 

 

Rosie's Theatre
Students in 5th grade are participating in a theatre programs called "Rosie's Theatre". Students learn the foundations of participating in a Broadway Show, building character and discipline for productions in theatre. 

 

Dancing Classrooms:
 

Ballroom Dancing 

Students in 4th grade participate in a 10-week dance instruction through the Dancing Classroom Program. Students learn a variety of ballroom dancing techniques and proper form. They conclude the program by participating in a competition the "Colors of the Rainbow" against other elementary school students. 

 

Community Works Dance Program 

 

Students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grade and 5th grade have explored the cultures of different countries through dance and movement. Students participate in a 12-week course of dance through the school year that is aligned to the unit.
